Gregory Johnson

Gregory Allen Johnson, 61, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2023, in Waco.

He was born June 16, 1961, in Fort Campbell Kentucky to Lynwood and Valiene Johnson. He grew up in Blackshear, Georgia and graduated from Pierce County High School. He joined the Navy on November 14, 1979 and served for 22 years. Greg served in Gulf War and was the recipient of multiple Air medals and decorations including Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Navy E Ribbon, Southwest Asia Service Medal and Naval Air Crewman. He retired in 2001, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After retiring from the Navy, he began working for Raytheon (L3) and retired after 20 years.

Greg married Liz in 2004 in Waco, Texas and they were happily married for 18 and a half years. Both Greg and his wife enjoyed traveling together and had recently returned from a trip to Italy and Greece.

He was preceded in death by parents, Lynwood and Valiene Johnson.

Greg is survived by his wife, Liz; sons, Gregory Johnson, David Johnson, and Ryan Johnson; stepsons, John VonElling, Bobby Von Elling and Cody Mayfield; brothers, Mike and Bob Johnson; sister, Terri Wainwright; and numerous nieces and nephews. Greg was best known as "Papi" to his 13 grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at his home in Hewitt, Texas on Friday, January 6 with close friends and family.
