Hugh McMullen

Hugh McMullen, 91, of Waco passed away peacefully Thursday, August 26th, 2021. His life will be celebrated at a family graveside service.

Hugh was born August 16, 1930, in Justin, Texas, to John Harvey McMullen Sr. and Louise Ella Zumbro McMullen. Hugh was a proud alumnus of the University of Texas in Austin where he earned a civil engineering degree and met his first wife, Donna Lewis McMullen. They lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and then moved to Waco in 1953. Hugh and Donna had four children together. They lost their first daughter, Elizabeth Anne, at age 2. The couple went on to have Richard, Kay and Philip. Hugh was an attentive father who enjoyed boating and taught all his children to waterski.

Hugh worked at the plant in McGregor which began as Rocketdyne and changed hands several times over his career. It is now the location of Spacex. As head of operations and maintenance, he took pride in making sure all the equipment worked properly.

Later in life, Hugh married Doris Charlton and adopted her family which included Rick and Bettilu and their children Laci, Kelly and Clay. A few years later, Hugh began singing with the Texas Country Gentlemen. He had much joy from participating and being a part of this group. In 2003 Hugh suffered a major stroke and could no longer sing. His family admired the way he lived the last 18 years because even though he was not able to talk and had some limitations, he kept an impeccable appearance and an upbeat attitude.

Hugh was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne; his wife, Doris Charlton McMullen; his parents, John and Louise McMullen; his sister, Ruth McMullen Sawyer; and his brothers, John Harvey McMullen, Jr. and Lloyd Knox McMullen.

He is survived by his son, Richard Lewis McMullen and his spouse Deborah, their daughter Myka Canterbury, her husband, Jon, and their children, Grayson and Reese; Richard's son Daniel and his wife Lyndsey; Hugh's daughter Kay McMullen Tuel and her spouse David Tuel; Kay's daughter Elizabeth (JT) Buice (children Norah and Beau), Jeffrey (Jessica Hays) Tuel, Chrissy (Mike) King, and Katherine (Michael) McDaniel (children Cleet and Sloane); son Philip McMullen (Isabelle Lanoe), and their son Neal. Also surviving him is Rick (Bettilu) Charlton, daughter Laci (Scott) Terry (child Haley), daughter Kelly (Daniel) Bogard (daughter Kaitlyn), and Clay Charlton.
