Mary Blakely

October 28, 1926 — June 12, 2021

McQueeney, Texas

Virginia, as she was known to all, passed peacefully in her sleep, in McQueeney, Texas. But, not before enjoying her favorite dessert, vanilla ice cream, for her last meal.

Virginia was raised in Waco, as the daughter of Perry and Mary Shelton, both deceased; and the only middle sister of three brothers: Horner Shelton, deceased and survived by wife (Melba) of Waco; Robert Shelton and wife (Dixie) of Houston; and John Shelton and wife (Doris) of Houston. She is also survived by her only child, Brian Wayne Blakely of McQueeney and wife (Deidra); grandsons, Steven Blakely of Seguin (Ashley) and daughter Presley; Spencer Blakely of New Braunfels; Casey Blakely and Dillon Blakely of McQueeney; and another granddaughter, Rylan of Temple; daughter in law, Esther Blakely of New Braunfels; many nieces and nephews, cousins, caregivers, ladies from bible study, friends, and colleagues.

Virginia was married to the gifted writer, and editor of the San Antonio Light newspaper, Sam Blakely, who pre-deceased her, after almost 45 years of marriage. They spent much time with family, travel, and attending grandchildren’s events. Virginia was a strong, intelligent, lady who will be remembered by her family as putting their interests ahead of her own throughout her life. She led a simple home life and had a competitive work ethic, not retiring until she was 82. She remained an advocate for the rights of women demonstrated through higher education and encouraged all family to achieve their dreams. Virginia will be missed by many, but we know she finished well according to her faith.
